The New Watch Tower
The New Watch Tower is a cinema resembling a Martello tower, defensive
forts used in the 19th century. The cinema offers a space to watch for
escapism rather than surveillance, a new type of watching. Integrated
into an unused corner of the Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club, this proposal
has two structures, a cinema tower and a bath house burrowed into the
hill. The cinema addresses the top of the hill whereas the bath house
addresses the sea promenade. Slanted pillars on the façade of the
bathhouse will become seawalls as the coast retreats. The overall
composition explores contrast: calm interior spaces versus chaotic
exteriors, verticality of the tower against horizontality of a low-lying
plinth, enclosed spaces and open spaces.
