The Gatehouse
Inspired by Katsura and the agricultural vernacular, The Gatehouse is the focal point of a remedial wetland landscape. The centre’s spiralling formation maximises views out, but the central street-like void maintains a sense of privacy. Habitat maintenance creates the material to thatch the pitched roofs. By exposing this materiality in the ceilings, patients can watch the daylight move across the under-thatch, in a building that is the antithesis of claustrophobic clinical environments.
