A Nation of Shop-less Shopkeepers
Cardigan, Wales
Like many regional towns, Cardigan’s High Street is slipping
into decline. Whilst retail continues to shift into the digital sphere and
detached and excessive consumption comes under scrutiny, the form of the high
street remains relatively unchanged from 150 years ago. The high street is
increasingly subject to a pervasive national nostalgia.
This project speculates on a chance to re-engage high
streets with production, through an exploration of traditional and evolving
maker practices within Cardigan. The high street is reimagined as a locally
administered, adaptive, and representative space, exploring and challenging the
relationship between regional towns and increasing globalisation.
