A New Gokul

The title of the project is taken from the birthplace of the Hindu god Lord Krishna, who is regarded as the protector of cows, first established in the sacred texts of the Bhagwad Gita. It is here in which the divine relationship between cow and man is elevated. The project proposes to situate a dairy farm on the decommissioned site of the Bacton Gas Terminal, in 2060. The farm is part of a wider complex which aims to integrate spaces of public leisure with a rejuvenating space for cattle. The dairy farm houses 50 cows and is supported by maize, which is harvested for fodder for the cows and permanent pasture land, for the cows to graze in the summer months. Silage towers store the harvested maize, with additional facilities such as waste storage, accommodation for farmers and educational space for children. The courtyard acts as a space in which the people of Bacton engage with and learn from the sacred, ritual-like nature of farming.
